In this Koldfront portable countertop dishwasher review, we’ll look at the pros and cons of this model of countertop dishwasher.
Pros of the Koldfront Portable Countertop Model PDW60EW / PDW60EB
Countertop dishwashers in general have several advantages over full sized models. One benefit is cost – $150 to $300 for a quality portable dishwasher instead of $300 for a full sized dishwasher that hardly works and over a thousand dollars for a good one. The Koldfront is at the higher end of the counter-top dishwasher range, but its performance rivals that of full sized dishwashers.
The quick connect adapter for your faucet means it works whether the dishwasher plumbing connections have rusted out, the older house doesn’t have dishwasher connections, or you need a second dishwasher but don’t have the space under the cabinets for one.
While this is billed as a portable dishwasher, you can have someone splice it into the hot water and drain lines in the kitchen. This makes it a viable solution for someone living alone in an older house that doesn’t have the space for a full sized dishwasher or was never wired and plumbed for a dishwasher in the first place.
The Koldfront can heat up cold tap water to 149F, getting dishes clean whether or not you have hot water at the tap.
This countertop dishwasher has a rinse agent dispenser, something many competitors don’t have.
The Koldfront uses less energy than many of its rivals, though all counter-top dishwashers use more power proportionally than full sized dishwashers. However, it does have long wash cycles, and these cycles take longer if you’re running cold water instead of hot water into the dishwasher.
For a portable dishwasher, it does a decent job cleaning dishes. It doesn’t do quite as well drying them.
This dishwasher is small enough and light enough to be put on a roll around kitchen cart to supplement existing dishwashers in break rooms, cafeterias or a mother-in-law suite. It can also be installed in an RV or cabin.
Cons of the Koldfront Portable Countertop Model PDW60EW / PDW60EB
The unit sometimes leaks, especially if you run it immediately after running a prior load.
This dishwasher is louder than its peers, rated at 55 dB.
The adapter doesn’t fit all sink faucets, and if it doesn’t fit your faucet, it is hard to find an adapter for it.
The dishwasher doesn’t generate the pressure to get caked on food off the dishes and can’t properly dispose of large food pieces that may get rinsed off dishes. Expect to at least scrape off any food and sauce off the dishes into the trash to reduce this problem and minimize the risk of clogs. If it clogs, you will have a massive mess.
Observations About the Koldfront
This Koldfront portable countertop dishwasher review wouldn’t be complete without a few observations that are not clear points for or against the model but nevertheless may affect someone’s decision to buy the Koldfront.
The Koldfront can hold plates upto 10 inches in size. Expect to hand wash your large serving platters, baking trays and large dishes. But this is an issue you face with all portable dishwashers.
The dishwasher is 17” tall and may need additional space for the hoses. Measure the height of the area under your kitchen cabinets before you buy it.
The dishwasher is roughly two feet across. Realize that in a small apartment, this may take up most of the counter space next to the sink. And while it is called “portable”, it is too heavy to lower down to under cabinet storage and back up to the counter.
Be careful to turn off the water before disconnecting the hose or the water will spray everywhere.
